The Espresso Souterraine velvet zip jacket, in a deep espresso brown: a short, square-cut jacket with a small turn-down collar, a full-length metal zip, two chest pockets each set with a small metal rivet, and an inside pocket in the manner of a tailored jacket. The pile is dense and even, with a soft, low sheen that moves with the light rather than shining back at it, and the cloth holds the line of the jacket without stiffness. DESCRIPTION

The cloth is a polyester velvet with a short, fine pile, dense and even across the surface, so the colour reads deeper where the nap lies flat and a shade warmer where the light catches it. It has the softness of velvet and a low, controlled sheen, with no hard shine, and enough body to hold the line of the jacket without stiffness.

A small turn-down collar over a full-length metal zip, two chest patch pockets each finished with a small metal rivet, an inside pocket set in the manner of a tailored jacket, a button at each cuff and a plain hem with no rib or band. The sleeves are cut to the natural forward set of the arm, so the jacket sits quietly with the hands in the pockets or on a table.

It is cut regular and short, with a dropped shoulder and a straight body that ends at the hip, so it sits well over trousers and does not shorten the leg. Over a roll neck for dinner, over a shirt and tie in the office at 18 degrees, over a T-shirt on the flight: it does the work of a jacket and a knit at once, and goes under a coat for the week somewhere colder.

• Trims: metal zip; metal rivets at the chest pockets; buttons at the cuffs

Care Instructions
• Hand wash, or a gentle machine cycle, in cool water, 30 degrees at most, with a little neutral detergent
• No soap, washing powder, bleach or fabric softener, and no long soak
• Do not wring: press the water out, reshape, and dry in the shade, away from direct sun and heat
• Do not tumble dry
• Do not iron the pile; a light steam, held away from the cloth, lifts a crease
• Hang on a broad hanger; brush the pile in one direction with a soft brush
