DESCRIPTION

The yarn is Italian cotton, spun heavy and worked in moss stitch — knit and purl alternating on every stitch and every row — so the surface builds into a dense pebbled ground with weight behind it. It is a slower way to make cloth, and it takes more yarn than any flat knit would. What it gives back is a hand closer to towelling than to jersey: soft, absorbent, faintly spongy under the fingers.

The collar is a broad rib, folded and left open over a deep V bound in the same rib. Sleeves finish in a wide ribbed cuff, the hem in a deep ribbed band. On a knit carrying this much weight, the ribs are what hold the line.

It is knitwear that behaves like a shirt — worn without thought, and kept for years. With tailored trousers it carries an evening; with the matching short it reads as a set.

• Hand wash cold, or professional dry clean
