About VAEL PARIS

VAEL PARIS is a menswear house. We make a small number of things, in the best cloth we can buy, and we make them again the following year.

The house was built the other way round from most. The first question was never what a coat should look like — it was what it should be made of. Everything else followed from the answer: the weight, the drape, the way a shoulder holds after a season. Design came after material, and still does.

What we make

A wardrobe, not a collection. Shirts, polo shirts, knitwear, trousers, outerwear — the pieces a man actually reaches for, cut to be worn together and to keep working as they age. Nothing is designed to be current. Nothing is designed to be replaced.

Winter is built on fibre: merino, cashmere, wool woven for weight and warmth. Summer opens up — linen, cotton, hemp, weaves chosen for what they do in heat rather than how they photograph. The house does not change between the two. Only the cloth does.

Where the cloth comes from

Our wool and cashmere are woven in Biella, in the foothills of the Piedmontese Alps, where fine fibre has been spun since the medieval period. The mills there have made the same cloth for generations and know exactly what it will do. Soft alpine water lets fine fibre be scoured and finished without hardening it — which is why the district's cloth handles the way it does, and why it could not simply be made somewhere cheaper.

Linen, cotton and hemp are chosen on the same terms: what the fibre does against skin, in heat, after fifty washes.

What we leave off

There is no logo on the outside of our clothes. If the cloth is right, it does not need announcing. We would rather a garment be recognised at close range, by the person wearing it, than at a distance by everyone else.

We do not run seasons in the usual sense, and we do not discount to move stock. Pieces stay in the wardrobe until the cloth or the cut can be improved.

Where we are

Designed in Paris. Cloth woven in Biella, Italy. Garments assembled in Asia. We say so plainly, because a house that talks about material should be willing to say where all of it happens.
